Looking around Roh Projects gallery is surely a treat to one’s senses. Yesterday, I visited Roh Projects for the first time and I enjoyed viewing the solo exhibition, entitled Spectral Fiction by Syagini Ratna Wulan (a.k.a Cagi), a Bandung born artist.
Located on the 40th floor of Equity Tower in SCBD, Jakarta, the beautiful gallery offers a great atmosphere for looking at artworks. It also overlooks the city of Jakarta, giving a breathtaking view from above.
The colourful artworks of Cagi hanging and leaning against the white walls beautifully capture the role of light and colors in our daily consumption of digital images on our gadgets, making us realise the beauty of colors itself without the bias and distortion of digital screens.
The exhibition showcases two series of works, the first comprising of artworks using canvas as its medium, and the second using resin. The use of resin in the artworks create reflections within the artwork itself and creates a sense of depth in them.
“These works are resulted from a certain specific ecology: an “optic ecology” of digital culture that shapes our reality and connotes new awareness about light and color”.
“Cagi believes that color remains a fascinating mystery, yet it should not be likened to a ghost that may possess the art and transform it into artificial practice. Although it is oftentimes demoted as part and parcel to cosmetics, decorations, and mere ornamentations, color remains a color, which truly has no name”
As quoted by curator of the exhibition, Agung Hujatnikajennong
Inside the gallery in a smaller room, Cagi plays around with light to create unique shapes through colours and shadows, illuminating the white room with dancing colors. I highly recommend those who love the arts to visit the gallery and look at the artworks for themselves as it surely is an enticing experience.
The gallery is open for public and entrance is free. Unfortunately, this solo exhibition only lasts until tomorrow, May 20, 2016. I am definitely looking forward to the upcoming exhibitions this gallery has to offer, and the next series of artworks Cagi will come up with, because this one was surely impressive.
