Being your own idol

The other day I was scrolling through Path when I came across a quote that really stood out to me. It stated:

“Don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 20”.

Sometimes without realising, we just can’t help but compare ourselves with someone out there who is more successful than us, like a famous entrepreneur or even our friends. However, most of the time, there are many things going on in their lives that we don’t know about. Most of the people who we see as living the life and being very successful has gone through their own struggles of getting to where they are. Instead of focusing on other people’s lives, our time is better spent working on our own to be able to achieve what we want, because basically everyone has their own different path to success.

Like the CEO of Nasty Gal Sophia Amoruso said, “The energy you’ll expend on focusing on someone else’s life is better spent working on your own. Just be your own idol.”

Confidence and keeping an optimistic mind are keys to achieving personal success because most of the time, the limitations that we face come from our own minds. If we expect a lot from ourselves, subconsciously we’d try to work harder to achieve something and not settle with mediocrity.

Even though your goals and dreams may seem so far away, start by taking small steps that will get you there. Remember, the successful person you admire may already be in their Chapter 20, already finding their way throughout the conflicts, whereas you are just starting out in Chapter 1. So focus on yourself and do what you got to do to be the person you want to be.

  1. Love this. I saw the quote “don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s end” which is same same. Huge thanks. Exactly what I needed to read at the moment. Head down ass up. xo
